Prisma ORM 7's Rust-free query engine speeds up queries and slows down cold starts

DEV · By Alex Georgiev ·

The Brief

  • Prisma ORM 7's Rust-free query engine is reported to be up to four times faster, according to Prisma's blog.
  • An independent test found the speed claim held up almost exactly.
  • The same test found node_modules came out 31% bigger, not the 85-90% smaller that Prisma claimed, and cold starts got slower.

Why it matters

Teams running Prisma in serverless or other cold-start-sensitive environments may see slower startup and larger dependency footprints, even though query performance improves.

Who’s affected

  • Teams using Prisma ORM 7
  • Developers running Prisma in serverless or cold-start-sensitive environments
  • Prisma ORM 7
  • #prisma
  • #orm
  • #performance
  • #cold-start
  • #node.js

Prisma's own blog says its new query engine is 85-90% smaller and up to four times faster. I installed it next to the engine it replaces and measured both claims on my own machine. The speed claim held up almost exactly. The size claim did not: node_modules came out 31% bigger…

How do you feel about this?
